The Dolpo region surrounding Phoksundo Lake is inhabited by the Dolpo people, who have a distinct culture and lifestyle. There are 20 Buddhist stupas around the lake and a gompa on the east side in which Buddhists come here every year to offer prayers. Phoksundo Lake is considered sacred by both Buddhists and followers of the indigenous Bon religion. The Bon-po religion, which forms the entire cultural base for Tibetan Buddhism, was founded 18,000 years ago, during the Zhang Zung Empire of today’s western Tibet.

To reach Phoksundo Lake, start by taking a flight to Nepalgunj, which typically takes around 1 hour. Explore the surroundings of Nepalgunj and prepare for the upcoming adventurous trek to Phoksundo Lake. On another day, board a flight to Juphal, a small village in the Dolpa district, which serves as the nearest airport to Phoksundo Lake. The trek to Phoksundo Lake commences from Juphal and typically lasts around 9 to 11 days, depending on your chosen itinerary and trekking pace. This trail leads through several villages, including Dunai, Raktang, Chhepka, Sanduwa, and ultimately, Phoksundo Lake.

The trek offers breathtaking views of majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, and passes through lush Rhododendron forests, as well as bamboo and blue pine groves. Along the trails, trekkers may have the opportunity to spot blue sheep, langur monkeys, and musk deer. Since Phoksundo Lake is situated within Shey Phoksundo National Park, trekkers are required to obtain the Shey Phoksundo National Park permit and are highly recommended to enlist the services of an experienced guide. Throughout the trekking route, you can find several lodges and tea houses where you can enjoy meals and can stay overnight.
