About the Trek:
Gosaikunda trek is one of the nearest and popular trekking destinations from kathmandu. The Trek is located inside the Langtang National park of Nepal. The highlight of the trek is Gosaikunda lake, a pristine glacial lake situated at an altitude of 4380m. The Lake is popular for its stunning alpine scenery and its religious significance to both Hindus and Buddhists. There are all together 108 lakes including Bhairav kunda, Naag kunda, Sarswoti kunda and Surya Kunda. The highest elevation during the trek us Luribina la Pass at an elevation of 46710 meters above sea level. The trek can easily be completed in 4 to 5 days starting the trip from kathmandu.
There are multiple routes for the trek. Sundarijal, Melamchi, Nuwakot and Dhunche. THe most preferred route is via Dhunche. The trek starts from Dhunche after a nearly 5 to 6 hrs drive from kathmandu. The trek duration ranges from 5 to 7 days to complete depending on the route and trekking pace. The trek can also be done as a side trek to Langtang Valley Trek. The trail traverses through lush green forest, small villages, rugged terrains along with the breathtaking views of Langtang and Ganesh Mountain range, including Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa. The lake is frozen for six months in winter October to June, Later the lakes melts to form the Trishuli river.
RELIGIOUS Significance:
Gosaikunda is one of the popular and religious site. According to Hindu Mythology, Gosaikunda is known as the abode of Hindu Deities SHiva (Mahadev) and Gauri. According to Hundu scriptures, Bhagavata purana, Vishnu purana and the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata refer to Sumudra manthan which is directly related to the origin of Gosaikunda. Its water is considered holy during Gandagashahra and the Janai purnima festivals. Thousands of Pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the area during these festivals. According to Hindu Mythology, the holy lakes of Gosaikunda were created by lord shiva’s Trishul (three- pointed weapon), so that he could drink its cold water and quench the heat that he felt in his throat after he drank poison from Samudra Manthan.
