Tsho Rolpa Trek is a popular trekking destination in Nepal, known for its stunning glacial lake, Tsho Rolpa, and the beautiful Rolwaling Valley. The trek lies within the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, which is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the Tsho Rolpa Trek:
After a one-day bus journey from Kathmandu and a three-day trek, you reach Tsho Rolpa, the largest glacial lake in Nepal, situated in the northern region of Dolakha.
Tsho Rolpa is in Rolwaling Valley, Ward No. 9 of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality, Dolakha district. It is the largest glacial lake in Nepal, located at an altitude of 4,580 meters above sea level. The lake is estimated to have formed around 50 years ago. In 1963, it covered an area of 0.23 square kilometers, but according to satellite imagery taken in 1997, it has expanded to around 1.65 square kilometers.
Tsho Rolpa is about 135 meters deep, and it is estimated to hold approximately 100 million cubic meters of water.
The Araniko Highway passes through the Khadichaur of Sindhupalchok District and reaches Charikot, Dolakha District. As you travel from Dolakha to Charikot, you will come across lush green rice terraces in Sundrawati and Sunkhani, which make the journey more enjoyable. We can stay overnight and relax at Singati Bazaar, Gongar Khola, and the nearby Riverside Hotels and Lodges.
On the second day, in the morning, after about half an hour’s walk from Gongar, you will reach the upper Tamakoshi, from where you will head towards Chhet Chhet Bazaar (1410 m). From there, the actual trek to Tsho Rolpa (4580 m) begins, which is 40km far.
Throughout the journey, you will be welcomed by beautiful waterfalls. As you reach Tsho Rolpa, you will be able to see small and large, pristine waterfalls. The first waterfall, in particular, is quite unique and naturally formed.
After crossing the Suspension Bridge from Chhet Chhet, the journey begins towards the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. After a two-hour uphill climb, you will reach the beautiful village Simigaun (2000 meters).
The hospitality of Simigaun is sweeter than any local delicacy or rice wine found in the region. From there, you proceed ahead towards Surmuche (2480 meters) after a challenging uphill climb of about 1.5 hours.
From Surmuche, you will continue to Dogyank (2780 meters) on the second day. The path passes through a well-managed trail with signboards and dust bins, keeping the environment clean.
From Dogyank, you will reach the market of Rolwaling Khola. You will stay there for the night and start your trek in the next morning.
After breakfast in Dogyank, the journey continues towards Thangding (3300 meters), where you can enjoy the view of beautiful waterfalls along with delicious local cuisine.
From Thangding, the trek takes you to Bedding village, which is a unique blend of nature and culture. The sacred Gaurishankar Himal (7134 meters), symbolizing Lord Shiva and Parvati, stands majestically in the backview of Beding.
Sherpas reside in this village, with around 80 households and a population of about 400. Beding is also known as the village from where successful summiteers of Mount Everest are recognized.
The trekking path leads to Tsho Rolpa from Beding. Leaving early in the morning around 5 AM, you can cover the distance to Tsho Rolpa and even see the stunning views of Tsho Rolpa Himal (4580 meters) with snow shining under the sun’s rays.
The trek to Chho Rolpa is comfortable and allows you to witness the full beauty of the lake. From a well-constructed embankment, the water from Chho Rolpa flows into Rolwaling Khola.
You can also extend the journey by three hours to reach Dudha Kunda and further to Namche Bazaar. There are enormous hotels and guesthouses available for accommodation, and Dudha Kunda is known for its picturesque lake and panoramic views.
In the cold season, it’s relatively easy to trek and fully enjoy the beauty of this lake. Properly constructed paths make it accessible and enhance the overall trekking experience. You can also explore the Thasi Lapcha Pass during a three-day extension trek from Dudha Kunda to Namche.
You can relax at the beautiful lake and return to Simigaun to savor local cuisine and enjoy the serene environment.
The best time to undertake the Tsho Rolpa Trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. The ideal months are March to May and September to November. During these periods, the weather is relatively stable, and the sky is clear, offering excellent views of the mountains and landscapes. The temperatures are also moderate, making it comfortable for trekking. It’s important to avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rainfall and potential landslides.
Before embarking on the Tsho Rolpa Trek, make sure to obtain the necessary permits and be well-prepared with proper gear and a trained guide to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in this remote and stunning region of Nepal.
